How Coaching Fees Can Be Covered

Using HSA/FSA Funds
Many clients may be able to use their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to cover coaching fees.

Here’s how:
• A physician provides a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) stating that health and wellness coaching is recommended to treat or manage a medical condition.
• With this letter, coaching services can often be reimbursed through HSA/FSA funds.
• Each provider has different requirements, so it’s important to check with your plan administrator.

If you choose to work with me, I can provide you with a draft letter template for your physician to complete. This makes the process easier and ensures you have the right documentation to submit for reimbursement.

Insurance Reimbursement Potential: CPT Codes
Health & Wellness Coaching is now formally recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) with official billing codes, called CPT codes. These codes allow coaching services to be submitted for insurance reimbursement in certain situations.
• 0591T – Individual, face‑to‑face initial assessment
• 0592T – Individual follow‑up session (30+ minutes)
• 0593T – Group session (30+ minutes, 2+ individuals)

Currently, these codes are in the “evaluation phase,” which means not all insurers reimburse automatically. However, they are being tracked and used in systems like the Veterans Health Administration, and they represent a major step toward broader coverage.

What this means for you:
• You may be able to request that your physician or healthcare provider submit coaching services under these CPT codes.
• As more data is collected, insurance reimbursement for coaching will become increasingly common.
•  Working with me positions you at the forefront of this movement—your coaching sessions may soon be recognized as part of your healthcare plan.

Frequently Asked Questions: Using HSA/FSA & CPT Codes

Q: Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for health & wellness coaching?
Yes—many clients can! If your physician recommends coaching as part of treating or managing a medical condition, your coaching fees may qualify for reimbursement through your HSA or FSA.

Q: What do I need from my doctor?
You’ll need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from your physician. This letter states that coaching is recommended to support your health.

Q: Can coaching be covered by insurance?
Health coaching now has official CPT codes. While coverage is still emerging, these codes are paving the way for insurance reimbursement. Some systems already recognize them, and more insurers are expected to follow.

Q: That sounds complicated—can you help me with the letter?
Absolutely. If you work with me, I’ll provide you with a draft letter template that your physician can easily fill out. This makes the process much simpler and ensures you have the right documentation.

Q: What if I don’t have a medical condition?
Currently, HSA/FSA funds and CPT code reimbursement can only be used if coaching is tied to the prevention, treatment, or management of a medical condition. If you’re seeking coaching for personal growth or general wellbeing, you would pay out of pocket.
