How Coaching Fees Can Be Covered

Using HSA/FSA Funds
Many clients can use their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to cover coaching fees.

How it works:
• Your physician completes a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) recommending health and wellness coaching for a specific medical condition.
• With this letter, coaching services can often be reimbursed through HSA/FSA funds.
• Requirements vary by plan, so check with your HSA/FSA administrator.

If we work together, I can provide a draft LMN template to make the process simple and clear.

Insurance Reimbursement: AMA‑Recognized CPT Codes
Health & Wellness Coaching is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) with Category III CPT codes. These codes allow coaching sessions to be submitted for insurance review in certain situations:

• 0591T — Individual, initial assessment
• 0592T — Individual, follow‑up session (30+ minutes)
• 0593T — Group session (30+ minutes, 2+ individuals)

These codes are currently in the evaluation and data‑tracking phase, meaning:
• Not all insurers reimburse automatically
• Some systems, such as the Veterans Health Administration, are already using them
• Broader coverage is expected as more data becomes available

What This Means for You?
• You may request that your physician or healthcare provider submit coaching sessions using these CPT codes.
• Some systems already use them, and broader coverage is expected as more data becomes available.
• Working with a National Board‑Certified Health & Wellness Coach positions you at the forefront of this emerging coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions: HSA/FSA & CPT Codes

Q: Can I use my HSA or FSA for coaching?
Yes — many clients can. If your physician recommends coaching to help treat or manage a medical condition, your fees may qualify for HSA/FSA reimbursement.

Q: What do I need from my doctor?
A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) states that coaching is recommended to support your health.

Q: Can coaching be covered by insurance?
Health coaching now has official AMA‑recognized CPT codes. Coverage is still emerging, but these codes are creating a pathway for future reimbursement. Some systems already use them, and more insurers are expected to follow.

Q: Can you help with the letter?
Absolutely. I provide a draft LMN template that your physician can easily complete.

Q: What if I don’t have a medical condition?
HSA/FSA funds and CPT code submissions currently apply only when coaching supports the prevention, treatment, or management of a medical condition. Coaching for personal growth or general wellbeing is paid out of pocket.
